This week I attended an event at the Safeway Headquarters designed to form a relationship with bloggers, to get the information out about Safeway’s Coupon Policy and their new Just For U program. I think this is a great giant leap in the right direction, this is a new area for Safeway and I couldn’t be happier that they see the need to speak to you, my readers directly.
Now this Just For U program has only *officially* launched in Hawaii, Illinois, and Northern CA – however some of the same changes will apply nationwide. Some changes you’ll see in your local store…
Safeway no longer accepts eCoupons from cellfire.com, PGeSaver, Upromise, and shortcuts.com. Instead what they have done is create a very.com/prehensive Coupon Center that we will discuss in detail below.
Safeway no longer allows for the stacking of a paper coupon and an eCoupon, so it’s pretty safe to say that we’ll see fewer freebies. However I’ll share with you below a few HOT deals I was able to find by stacking my Personalized Savings price with a Club Special and a paper manufacturer’s coupon. So we can stack – just in a different way.
Safeway DOES allow the use of eCoupons loaded to your card through their Coupon Center on Home Delivery orders! This is huge as it has never been done before. Paired with this week’s $15 off $50 + FREE delivery coupon code I’m certain there are some good deals to be found.
Safeway now has Coupon Centers in their stores, full set-ups where you can load coupons to your card and print your shopping list right there before you shop! They did say there was about a 30 minute delay before the eCoupons made it to your card, so it wouldn’t work for a dashing in and out shopping trip.
The new Safeway Coupon Center replaces the previous outside sourced eCoupons – making for a much simpler method of loading your eCoupons. It does appear to be a very.com/prehensive collection of coupons, the only downside is that we can no longer stack our eCoupons and paper coupons.
In each ad there are about 100 featured Club Specials – these are the deals that I have available to me to do Coupon Match-Ups for you. However what I didn’t realize is that each week there are over 2,000 club specials in the store that never make it to print, wow! With that said as much as I’d love to be able to tell you about ALL of the club specials, I simply can’t. What this section of the Just For U program does is highlights the Club Specials they think you would be interested in based on your purchase history. So we’ll still have the ad to match up the loss leaders and hot buys but in addition we’ll have access to many more Club Specials without having to leave our homes – this opens a door to be able to be just that much more prepared for our shopping trips.
This is the newest feature and most likely the one that you’ll enjoy the most – Personalized Deals. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had several really great deals on my card when I registered. Basically they track your purchases and customize deals “Just For U” based on your purchase history. What I love about these deals is that they work with Club Specials (discussed below) and you CAN use eCoupons or paper coupons with them. If or when a Catalina promotion comes around, that would also be something you could “stack” with a Personalize Deal. Your Personalized Deal price is good for 90 days, so basically you have a very extended sale price to use as you’d like as many times as you’d like. If by chance your Personalized Deal is higher than a store sale – the lowest price will always win out. Here are 2 examples of my Personalized Deals on my card right now….
Quaker Instant Oatmeal – $2.44 ea (Shelf Price is $4.99)
Club Special through 11/2 – Buy 2 Get 2 Free
Use (2) $1/1 Select Quaker Oatmeals, exp. 10-31 (RP 8/29/10)
Final Price: $2.88 for 4 boxes or $0.72 ea
Oscar Mayer Bologna – $1.84 ea (Shelf Price is $3.99)
Club Special through 11/2 – Buy 1 Get 1 Free
$1/2 Oscar Mayer Lunch Meat, exp. 11-7-10 (SS 09/26/10)
Final Price: $0.84 for 2 or $0.42 ea!
So those are just a couple of deals I found this week using my Personalized Prices. So, what’s the downside? I don’t know what your Personalized Prices are so I won’t be able to help you in as much detail as I have been able to in the past. The upside is that you’re going to have even more deals that are personalized just for you based on your shopping history. I also have a hunch that since we as couponers all seem to shop in the same fashion, we’ll be seeing several of the same Personalized Deals.
Now I know we’ve all been experiencing less than stellar shopping trips lately. I’ve tested this new program twice now, both times with excellent experiences – in my opinion this takes a lot of stress off of the cashiers. They aren’t in the position any longer to have to deal with our issues when a cellfire or shortcuts eCoupons doesn’t come off. Since it was an outside company, they had no way of verifying or handling those situations.
That’s the beauty of printing your Safeway Shopping List – if a Personalized Deal or eCoupon is loaded to your card and by chance doesn’t come off, the cashiers are trained to look at the list you printed and verify the product you purchased is indeed correct against your list and immediately credit you back the difference. I will say that I thought I had found an error on my shopping list when I bought Ore-Ida Potatoes (Personalized Price of $2.26)- I purchased the Steam & Mash but it wasn’t the right product, it was meant to be on the the fries, tater tots, etc. I brought this to corporate and they are now working to expand the description to avoid this issue. Even still I was issued my refund right away.
